About Lymphoedema
WHAT IS
LYMPOEDEMA?
Lymphoedema is the swelling of a part of the body due to a build-up of fluid in the skin.
It usually
affects the legs or arms, but can affect any part of the body.
A recent study suggested 100,000 people in the UK may be affected by this condition.
Whilst it
is not a painful condition, it can be extremely uncomfortable and can affect mobility
and movement.
WHAT CAUSES
LYMPHOEDEMA?
Lymphoedema occurs when there is a problem with the lymphatic system. The lymphatics
form part
of your immune system and are responsible for cleansing your tissues and maintaining
a balance of fluids in your body. If the lymphatic system is not working correctly, the
fluid in
the tissues builds.
TYPES OF
LYMPHOEDEMA: Lymphoedema can be described as primary or
secondary.
Primary lymphoedema is usually present from birth and arises due to the under-development
or failure
of the lymphatic system. It may develop without any obvious cause at different stages in life, however,
particularly in adolescence and during menopause.
Secondary lymphoedema is the result of some problem outside of the lymphatic system
that prevents it working properly. This can be due to surgery, radiotherapy, injury or
infection, reduced mobility/paralysis, problems with veins and cancer.
TREATMENTS
WHAT IS MANUAL
LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE? (MLD)
A specialised type of skin movement that can help your
Lymphatics reduce Lymphoedema.
MLD is comfortable, rhythmic and slow skin
movements.
Lymphoedema may occur when the Lymphatics are
compromised by surgery, trauma, infection or disease.
HOW MAY IT HELP
ME?
Lymphoedema may also occur in a condition called
Lipoedema if the Lymphatics are compromised.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER ADDITIONAL
BENEFITS?
Also, MLD is reported to have additional benefits of
calming the sympathetic nervous system, creating an overall sense of well-being balancing the nervous
system.
Plus it is believed that MLD stimulates an Analgesic
response in some individuals.
WHAT IS KINESIO
TAPING?
A patch test is needed for taping (no latex or added
pharmaceutical properties in the tape)
Kinesiology taping can assist Lymphatic flow by gently
“lifting” the skin to allow Lymph to drain ...
Can be applied for: Lymphoedema, Lipodoema,
post operative Oedema, plus can also support muscles during activity.
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?
It is a complementary therapy which is non-intrusive and
is based on developed theories over centuries. It is believed that after working various points on the feet
or hands (can be face or ears also) aids wellbeing and relaxation.
